Landscaping And The Drought

For the third year in a row, our region’s snow and rain has been disappointing. As of January 10, 2014, the snowpack in Nevada was at 62% of normal in eastern Nevada, 18% in the Truckee River region and 28% in Carson.

In anticipation of continued drought conditions, there are a few things you can do now to prepare:

1. Install water conserving irrigation systems such as Matched Precipitation Rate Sprinklers, a multi-trajectory rotating stream delivery system that allows water to gently soak into the soil with an even distribution, reducing run-off. This increased efficiency results in 30% reduced water usage when compared to traditional sprays. Evapotranspiration (ET) Clocks use sensors and weather information to manage watering times and frequency. The result is a water savings of approximately 15 – 30%, deeper root systems and a healthier landscape.
2. Consider a water audit. A Landscape Irrigation Audit evaluates pressure, flow rates and application of water distribution to determine the efficiency, uniformity and precipitation rate of your current system.
3. Xeriscaping. Xeriscaping uses drought-tolerant plants and efficient irrigation. Compared to a traditional landscape of similar size, a xeriscape will typically use 50-75% less water.
4. Get a jump start on your spring inspections to identify sources of water waste.
5. Aerate your turf and add mulch around trees, shrubs and planter beds.
